Mortgage Payment Protection

Mortgage payment protection insurance is short-term cover designed to help meet mortgage payments if you are unable to work.

Overview

What is mortgage payment protection?

Mortgage payment protection insurance, often shortened to MPPI, is designed to cover your monthly mortgage payment for a limited period if you cannot work. Policies are usually offered on an accident and sickness basis, an unemployment basis, or both combined.

Benefit periods are typically limited, commonly around twelve to twenty four months, which makes MPPI a short-term safety net rather than a long-term income solution.

Who might this be suitable for?

  • Employees concerned about involuntary unemployment
  • Households wanting a short-term buffer over the mortgage payment
  • Clients who find full income protection unaffordable
  • Borrowers with limited savings to fall back on

Assessment

What may lenders and providers consider?

Benefit period

Payments are typically limited to a set number of months per claim.

Exclusion periods

Unemployment cover usually has an initial period during which claims cannot be made.

Employment status

Self employed clients are treated differently, particularly for unemployment cover.

Existing arrangements

Savings and employer benefits may already cover part of the risk.

Criteria vary between providers and can change at any time. Nothing here confirms that a particular lender or insurer will accept an application.
